This article describes how to access Moraware JobTracker from outside your office.
Security
Make sure your computer has the most recent updates from Microsoft and that you update your machine with any new patches immediately. You can check for the latest updates for Windows and sign up for automatic notifications of new updates at http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
Use strong passwords. This link has information about creating strong passwords. http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/passwords-create.aspx
Port Forwarding
To access JobTracker remotely, the router must be configured so that requests coming from outside on a specific port are forwarded to the server that is running JobTracker. The default port for HTTP requests is 80, however; we recommend that you don't open port 80, since it is likely to get a lot of virus/hacker traffic. Instead pick a 4 or 5-digit number to use as your external port. For example, if you select the number 14144, you would configure your router to map port 14144 to port 80 on the server that is running JobTracker.
It's best to choose a port number that is not used by a well-known application. The following website lists the ports that have been assigned to specific applications: http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers
IP Address
The second part of accessing the data from outside is the IP address. If you have a static IP address, you connect to: http://ipaddress:portnumber/JobTracker/
When traffic from outside hits this address, the router will translate it into: http://internalserveraddress:80/JobTracker/ and the request will be handled by JobTracker.
If you have a dynamic IP address that changes frequently, you will need to set up a dynamic DNS. We set up our dynamic DNS through http://www.zoneedit.comwhich is free. Other providers include http://www.dyndns.org and http://www.no-ip.com
This is potentially really simple or really complicated, depending on how your network is configured and how much you understand internet networking issues. If you have questions about this, please call us to discuss. The following website may also be helpful: http://www.portforward.com
